Considering Innovations in Cartography and Changes in Geographic Representation Methods

چکیده
Maps and map related objects are produced to represent geography. They range from paper maps to virtual installations, delivered using technologies that range from printing (traditional, on-demand and distributed) to the Internet (wired and wireless, desktop-facilitated and mobile). The underpinnings of the design and delivery of these representations are, and have been, linked to developments in theory and technology applied to the geosciences. These underpinning theories and technologies have been developed and applied throughout the course of the historical development of cartography and GI Science. This paper provides the results of a research project that was undertaken to ascertain how different thinking about what constitutes an artefact can be used to communicate information about geography. It has defined and investigated the development of different approaches to the depiction of geography in four eras: ‘Historical’; the ‘start’ of technology (1960s); the era of technological advancement (1990s); and the era of ‘modern’ technology. The paper reports on the findings, under these four ‘era’ headings and how cartographic artefacts have been employed for navigation, spatial analysis and the representation of 3-space + time.

Analysis on Geographical Changes and Research on Spatio- Temporal Patterns
As efforts grow to develop spatio-temporal database systems and temporal geographic information systems that are capable of conveying how geographic phenomena change, it is urgent to analyze the impetus and mechanism that the spatio-temporal process happed. The authors proposed a set of universal change patterns for modelling of spatio-temporal processes, which builds a fundamental basis for th...
متن کاملInformation Cartography Applied to the Semantics of Roget’s Thesaurus
Using algorithms, representation methods and models from Geographic Information Systems (GIS), information that has relationships between elements may be represented spatially, especially if some distance metric can be brought to bear. This paper discusses the use of spatial methods for the display of semantic data derived from Roget’s Thesaurus, and shares some insights derived by using these ...

متن کاملThe Cartography and Spatial Representation Traditions at Penn State
It is impossible to specify with any precision when the "cartography program" originated at Penn State. From the department's start in 1945, Penn State geography has been rooted in maps and mapping. Maps have been viewed as both an integral part of the research process and the result of research, rather than simply as a summary of research findings. Recent work using spatial adaptive filtering ...
